Red light cameras being challenged across U.S.

Posted on June 29th, 2011 No Comments

In at least 25 states in the U.S., the use of red light cameras has begun to be challenged by the states’ legislatures because, in many states, the cameras cost more to operate than they create in revenue.

Red light cameras have long been protested by drivers who are horrified to receive expensive tickets in the mail for minor infractions that they often do not remember committing. Many have also argued that the cameras do little to prevent unsafe driving habits because they are so discreet. For this reason, many judges do not enforce red light camera tickets, which allows many tickets to go unpaid. In many cities, like Los Angeles, the cost of operating the camera is greater than the profit made from them by over $1 million.

In April, the North Carolina Senate voted to ban red light cameras from the state’s roadways, however, the banning measure now lies in the House’s hands.
