Recent partnership aims to expedite the DWI legal process

Posted on November 27th, 2013 No Comments

In November, the Hickory District Attorney’s Office started a partnership with the Catawba Valley Medical Center. The medical center will assist the DWI conviction process by testing blood samples for alcohol content.

Before this partnership, the State Bureau of Investigation laboratory in Raleigh was the only place in North Carolina allowed to test blood samples for DWI cases. The over-saturation of samples in the lab led to a huge backlog, sometimes delaying the conviction process by two years.

District Attorney, Jay Gaither said that with this new initiative, law enforcement hopes to expedite the return of test result so that legal action can be taken quickly.

The North Carolina General Assembly earmarked $500,000 in funding to pay for blood testing in its 2013-2014 budget. Assistant District Attorney, Eric Bellas, said the state lab will be able to fund itself within the first six months of its operation.

People who face DWI charges could be sentenced to years in prison and financially crippling fines. If you have been accused of driving while impaired in North Carolina, contact the Law Office of Jim Black at 919-600-4609 to learn more about potential legal options.
