Forty-nine-year-old Raleigh resident Laura Smith, who was accused of drunk driving in the single-vehicular accident that claimed the life of her son, appeared in court on November 20 after being released from the hospital where she was receiving treatment, WTVD reported.

According to Raleigh police, Smith was driving over the speed limit and under the influence of alcohol when she lost control of her vehicle and crashed into a tree on Creedmoor Road, killing her 12-year-old son Anthony. Smith is facing charges of driving while intoxicated, felony death by motor vehicle, and exceeding a safe speed. Her bond was set at $150,000.

Smith was hospitalized from the October wreck to November 19. Her attorney pleaded that more than anything, Smith needs medical treatment.
