New bill increases DUI death penalties

Posted on July 10th, 2012 No Comments

A new North Carolina bill that would increase penalties for drivers who have been convicted of DUI manslaughter or felony death by vehicle to a Class D felony has been passed by the legislature. Governor Bev Perdue’s signature is all it needs to be approved.

According to WRAL, a similar bill called Senate Bill 393 was proposed last year but did not get out of committee. Senator Buck Newton, R-Nash has been a strong proponent for increasing penalties.

In rare cases, people convicted of killing a person while driving drunk can face second-degree murder charges. Most are charged with felony death by vehicle.

"Jim, I just wanted to thank you again for everything you did for me. I am very happy about the outcome and would recommend you to anyone and everyone who has a DUI case. Two things that stuck out the most is your patience and honesty, you wanted the best for me and that was obvious."
