Police charged 25-year-old Brandon Henry Staggers with drunken driving and manslaughter for causing a road accident that resulted in the death of a pedestrian on Saturday, October 5.

Sixty-four-year-old James Edwards, Jr. was trying to make his way across Hines Street near its intersection with Lodge Street when Staggers’ 2000 Chevrolet Blazer hit him at around 7:20 p.m.

Edwards was transported by emergency medical responders to the Wilson Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Staggers was indicted Wednesday with involuntary manslaughter, aggravated felony causing death by motor vehicle, and driving while impaired. He was released from the Wilson County Detention Center the same day after paying a $5,000 secured bond.

The Wilson County Police Department’s Strategic Traffic Enforcement Patrol is investigating the case.
