Laura’s Law will toughen punishments for repeat DWI offenders

Posted on June 20th, 2011 No Comments

Repeat DWI offenders may soon be facing stricter punishments as Laura’s Law, a bill named after a woman who was killed in a drunk driving accident last year, is headed to Governor Perdue’s desk to be signed.

The bill would require repeat offenders who have had multiple convictions of aggravated DWIs to serve at least 12-36 months in prison. Once released from prison, an alcohol-monitoring bracelet would then have to be worn by the offender for at least four months while he or she isĀ under supervision.

The bill would also allow repeat DWI offenders to be fined up to $10,000 and pay higher court costs than other individuals.

If you or someone you love has been charged with a DWI, please contact the Raleigh DWI penalties attorneys of the Law Offices of Jim Black at 919-600-4609 to speak with an experienced defense attorney.

"Jim, I just wanted to thank you again for everything you did for me. I am very happy about the outcome and would recommend you to anyone and everyone who has a DUI case. Two things that stuck out the most is your patience and honesty, you wanted the best for me and that was obvious."
