Ignition interlock maker sues NC DMV

Posted on August 30th, 2011 No Comments

Monitech Inc., a company that makes anti-drunk driving ignition interlocks, has filed a lawsuit against North Carolina’s Division of Motor Vehicles late last week. Ignition interlocks work by testing a driver’s blood alcohol content by having them breath into a breathalyzer before they can start the vehicle. The company claims that the DMV commissioner broke state bidding laws by withholding its contract renewal.

The owner of Monitech Inc. says he has endured a hostile business relationship with the DMV since he refused to sell his business to the Law Enforcement Association in 2004. Monitech Inc. is currently on a month-to-month contract with the DMV, an arrangement that the owner says puts them at a competitive disadvantage.
