Former NC doctor found guilty of felony DWI

Posted on March 18th, 2011 No Comments

Earlier this month, a former North Carolina doctor was sentenced to serve at least 3 years in prison after being convicted of driving while impaired, felony death by motor vehicle, and involuntary manslaughter.  The former doctor, Raymond Cook, was dismissed of a second-degree murder charge.  At most, Cook will spend 4 and a half years in jail.

In September 2009, Cook sped through an intersection in Raleigh and crashed into 20-year old Elena Bright Shapiro’s vehicle.  Shapiro, an aspiring ballerina, later passed away at the hospital.

Investigators believe that Cook was traveling 80 miles per hour in a 45 mile per hour zone at the time of the accident.  Prosecutors claimed that the doctor’s blood alcohol content was measure at .24 percent after the accident.  However, the defense argued that Cook had a blood alcohol content of .19 percent.

"Jim, I just wanted to thank you again for everything you did for me. I am very happy about the outcome and would recommend you to anyone and everyone who has a DUI case. Two things that stuck out the most is your patience and honesty, you wanted the best for me and that was obvious."
