What are the different types of field sobriety tests?

If a police officer pulls you over on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, he or she may subject you to a field sobriety test. Some of the most commonly used field sobriety tests include:

  • Walking from heel-to-toe in a straight line, then turning
  • Reciting parts of the alphabet
  • Counting backwards
  • Balancing on one leg
  • Eye movement tests

Officers are required to follow very specific protocols when administering these types of tests. If an officer administers a test incorrectly, the results may not hold up in court. Additionally, these tests are very subjective, and an officer could easily suspect a sober individual of being drunk depending on his or her performance during these tests.
