DWI squad to intensify patrols on downtown Raleigh

Posted on September 27th, 2013 No Comments

The Raleigh Police Department will be receiving a $525,270 federal grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to strengthen its enforcement of driving while intoxicated. The police department plans to use these funds to institute a unit that will include four officers and one sergeant, all of whom will be provided with new squad cars, uniforms, and portable breath testers.

According to Lieutenant Tim Tomczak, 30% of all fatal crashes in Raleigh in 2012 were due to alcohol-related vehicular offenses, making it time to implement greater measures that will prevent impaired people from driving.

This initiative was an offshoot of both the emergence of night clubs in the area and an early afternoon crash on St. Patrick’s Day when a driver who was allegedly drunk driving slammed into a vehicle on Wade Avenue, killing an elderly couple on their way home after spending time in church.
