Driver sentenced to 7 years in prison for hitting officer

Posted on April 10th, 2012 No Comments

A Belews Creek man was sentenced to seven years in prison last week after he hit a Des Moines police officer while he was intoxicated. The accident occurred last summer after the man had attended the Iowa State Fair.

According to authorities, the man had a blood alcohol level of 0.264, more than three times the legal limit, when he ran a red light and struck an officer crossing the street. The officer was thrown nearly 50 feet and suffered serious head injuries, a stroke, broken ribs, and a punctured lung.

The judge convicted him of driving under the influence and reckless driving. The man claims he should not be charged for reckless driving and believes the verdict is unfair.

"Jim, I just wanted to thank you again for everything you did for me. I am very happy about the outcome and would recommend you to anyone and everyone who has a DUI case. Two things that stuck out the most is your patience and honesty, you wanted the best for me and that was obvious."
