Myths about Sobering Up

Many people believe that they have special insight into methods by which they can quickly sober up before getting in a vehicle to drive home. However, many of these commonly believed remedies hold little real value in helping a person to become sober. Instead, a person may use these methods with the belief that they are somehow driving down their BAC when it remains illegally high.

False Remedies

Many solutions used to speed up the body’s ability to filter alcohol are often useful for helping to alleviate the symptoms of a hangover. However, these solutions do not actually help that individual become less intoxicated when drunk. As a result, they may still have a high level of BAC when they get behind the wheel. The following remedies have not been proven to help a person to eliminate alcohol from the bloodstream:

  • Coffee
  • Water
  • Exercise
  • Showering
  • Drinking juices
  • Eating after drinking

In reality, time is the only real way to lower a person’s BAC. In many cases, these remedies will better hydrate an individual or provide their body with necessary nutrients to overcome a hangover. Dangerously, a person may feel less intoxicated after drinking coffee, but this is simply an effect of drinking caffeine. Their BAC remains unchanged, no matter how many cups of coffee they may have consumed.
