Ignition Interlock Devices

One penalty for certain alcohol-related offenses is the installation of an ignition interlock device in the convicted individual’s vehicle. This device is installed into the dashboard of a vehicle and requires the driver to provide a breath sample before starting the car. If the driver’s breath contains a certain amount of alcohol, the device will prevent the car from starting and will log the incident.

Ignition Interlock Devices as a DWI Penalty

In North Carolina, anyone convicted of DWI with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.15% or more may be required to install an ignition interlock device in their vehicle for a period of time, often as an alternative to harsher sentencing. These devices work as follows:

  • A driver must blow into the device before the vehicle will start. If the driver’s breath contains a certain concentration of alcohol, sometimes as low as .02 percent, the device will log the event and the vehicle will not start.
  • If the driver attempts to start the vehicle, the vehicle alarm may sound and the lights will flash until the key is removed from the ignition.
  • To prevent another person from blowing into the device for the driver, some devices require that the driver provide another sample, often while driving. If alcohol is detected, the alarm will sound and lights will flash until the ignition is shut off.
